Musical Steps began in 2002 when experienced teacher and music graduate, Cathy McCallum, decided to put her skills to good use amongst a much younger age-group. As a new mum, Cathy appreciated first-hand the benefits of singing and making music with her baby. She also felt that exisiting music classes were, in her words, 'missing a trick'!
Cathy could see that by making music classes simpler and less 'commercial', everyone would have a much better time. By taking away the loud backing music and focusing on what babies and children actually enjoy, Cathy created classes where everyone is able to relax, parents and children can interact and bond, and children actually learn to make music. Most of all, the activities are fun, user-friendly and easy to do at home.
Local families soon became hooked on Cathy's classes in Glasgow, and it was clear that more teachers were needed to meet demand. Musical Steps has grown steadily over the years and there is now a team of Licensed Teachers bringing Musical Steps classes and nursery sessions to families across the UK and overseas.
Recent developments have included the launch of Tiny Tunes for newborn babies and their parents, a series of Musical Steps teaching books published by Bloomsbury, and the introduction of online teacher training courses.
Cathy is still actively involved in Musical Steps and would love to hear from you. If you have any feedback, comment, questions or ideas, please get in touch!
